I planted most of the native plants twelve years ago. I had to remove old compacted lawn (lasagna method), dug huge rocks out of clay soil and built hugelculture garden beds. I add more native plants each year. No chemicals of any kind have been used for at least 45 years (no pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides etc). Some native wildflowers have been removed by the City, or neighbors, or neighbors' hired lawn service who didn't understand that many native wildflowers don't bloom all season long and the "bees" probably won't sting you. I have numerous water sources for bees, butterflies, and birds.
