Hooray for Pollinators and Sunflowers in 2009! We are ready to mail out seeds!!
We’re pretty sure almost everyone needs the smile of a sunflower in their yard this year!
There are two things we need you to do to help us mail out seeds. First, log in, confirm that you want seeds and re-enter your mailing information. You can do that here. Last year, we got a lot of letters back because the addresses were incorrect so, please double, triple and gosh, quadruple check what you type. Apparently having a formal addressee will also help so, please give us a name for mailing. Everyone who has checked back in by March 10, will get mailed seeds. Even if you just signed up, please check back in and confirm your mailing address and add the name of the addressee.
If you can’t remember your password, click on reset password and we’ll walk you through a reset.
Second, we have expanded the garden description form so, please take a minute to tell us about your garden. We ask you to put an address in for the garden because many people have different mailing addresses than garden addresses. Do remember that you can register more than one garden if you have a school garden and home garden for example. I think this is a great way to get started thinking about planting this spring! These are some of the variables that we think are influencing pollinators at particular sites so, we want to know more about things like how developed the area is around your house and what type of habitat is there.
We can no longer mail seeds outside of the US and Canada. If you’d like to participate, we are putting a list of places that have the annual Lemon Queen sunflower available outside the US and Canada on the website. If you find a supplier, email us so that we can spread the word. We would love to have international data and hope that next year we will get some funding to mail seeds around the world.
Our next newsletter will cover the changes for this upcoming year that you can choose to participate in, including getting pollinator photographs from your sunflower, taking some data on the phenology of your sunflower and expanding our plant list to include a few perennials. If you get to planting before our next newsletter, please write down the date you planted your sunflower seed. We’d like to keep track of that this year.
As you all know, non-profits are struggling this year. We currently don't have a budget that allows me to staff responding to email. If you can post to the forums, I will do my best to respond there. I'll be in Brazil talking about pollinatros from the 7th-14th of March so, I'll be checking back in after that.
Thanks so much for joining us!

My 2009 Sunflower Seedlings
Hello Bee people.
Canada will not be into full garden swing for another two or more months. The seeds from the year before begin to germinate and start to sprout. I keep them together until I've decided on where they will be transplanted. Every year I get thousands of seedlings so I wanted to let you know that I will not be needing seeds sent to me. Thanks anyway and I will hopefully be able to participate in the Great Sunflower Project again this year.
Thanks again.
Correct Address
Made sure my address was correct. Can't wait to get the seeds and start planting these flowers.

Momz flower power
Second year so you are seasoned veterans now. Not so many surprises. I am sure there will be some surprises but the hardest part is over. Getting started is always the most challenging bit and you have that behind you now. You are going to have a wonderful year. This is a great project wishing you all the best.
My Garden
Barbara Jean Hurn
My garden is in the perimeters and bedecking the house in my new home. Its borders have brickwork, RR ties, and the walkway to the drive in area. My deck is spanned with yaupon trees, burning bush, variegated euonymus, peonies and multiple areas of monkey grass surrounding the structure. Trees dot the back yard in many color buds, and tea-roses line the back garden. On the west boundary of the property is a pecan tree whose fruit is fresh and tasty. Then up from the west/northwest side are Rose of Sharon that are currently at four feet. I am going to make a formal herb garden near the back porch this year. Am extremely excited to get the seeds and participate in this worthwhile cause.

My address is correct & I am looking forward to watching them grow & watching the bees! When I log in, it says "seeds not requested", but I did request them. Thank you!

Hoping for Better Luck This Year!
Last year, despite having large colonies of honeybees east and west of us, we only had honeybees on my lavendar in early spring! We never had them on the sunflowers. I am keeping my fingers crossed this year for much better sightings!
Last Year's Seeds
Extenuating circumstances, beyond the late delivery of the seeds, prevented me from participating last year. Would it be acceptable (in keeping with the project) to try germinating last year's seeds? If so, when is the earliest I should begin?
I will also germinate this year's seeds as well.
Send new seeds
None of our seeds germinated last year. I hope we will have better luck this year. Please send the seeds.
Last year's seeds
Only 4 of the seeds I planted last year sprouted and I have a greenhouse. Then none grew any taller than 4". I hope the company providing seeds for the project uses new and better seeds as I am jazzed to be participating.

Still using smaller sunflowers
We actually are choosing to use shorter sunflowers - though this year they may reach 5-6 feet. The shorter ones are easier to watch for bees and can be grown in containers so, more people can participate.
sunflower seeds
Account information says sunflower seeds have not been requested. I thought when the account was reactiavated for 2009 it also meant send seeds. So, send the sunflower seeds!
Thanks.
says seeds not requested but I did...
I just recieved an email to confirm my address so they can be shipped to me but on signing in is says seeds not requested and would like seeds sent to me this year.

I want you to note that it says by my name and address that I have not requested seeds. But, I do-do-do WANT seeds sent to me. Thanks.
Where to request seeds!
If you click on your user account, and go to the edit tab, then click on personal information, you'll find the spot to request sunflower seeds and the spot to put your mailing information. The link in the email should take you right to the page.

I hope I have confirmed my addie and will get some seeds.
I am disturbed about something I heard today. A local business in the heart of my downtown area has recently sold. During renovations of the building the discovered an infestation of bees. This had obviously happened before by a few more comments that were made concerning the swarm.
I was sad to learn they would probably be exterminating them. I have not a clue who you would call about this situation to help save the bees. Any ideas?
Bee Relocation
Hey! YES! You can contact your local extension office and ask them for a local bee keeper! They will be able to connect you with somebody who can take the swarm without harming the bees. You could also google 'local honey' for your area and contact somebody that lists-they always have some connections! Do your best to stop the bees destruction!
I agree with you that "You
