My sunflower seeds never came up. It could be that I recieved them so late in the season that they never really got going very well.
But the reason I am writing is because in the meantime, I discovered two hives in trees on my property. Apparently they had escaped and began a new hive. I had a beekeeper come out and access as to whether or not we could extract them from the trees. One of the hives was located high in a tree down into the trunk. that one we will wait until spring to try to relocate. The other one was in a tree that was taken down and broke in the process leaving the bees half in one side and half in the other side. After a few days they moved into only one side of the tree which was lying on the ground. The beekeeper came and sawed the log into a more reasonable size and put it into a box. After things settled down he came back and took the whole thing with him. So that hive should survive.
My neigthbor also has noticed that he also has a hive in a tree. So we assumed that someone close by has bees.
I noticed that these bees really like the thistles out in the field. I know that these plants are supposed to be destroyed, but I left a few of them this year.
So even though I was not counting bees, I was busy saving bees. I hope that this counts in some way.
