Devastation! Any hope?

Came out to find a raging windstorm has knocked over my pride and joy - the only one of my sunflowers that is doing really well - about 4 feet tall. The stem was not broken, only bent... Is there any hope? none of my sunflowers are in flower yet, and i'm a little depressed that the best is now wrecked!

Thanks

Marianne

Update!

They SURVIVED and managed to bloom! I loosely staked them and they lived :) SOOOOO happy!

Re bent stalks: Try a splint

The same thing happened to our two sunflower plants. We were able to stake the plants up again, and they recovered nicely. I found that thin bamboo stakes can be used to splint the stalk; line the stake up along with the stalk and tie it on in several places on either side of the bent section. I used the twist ties that come with garbage bags.

Good luck!

Bumble Bee

We don't have enough bees to spare. This year I looked forward the the coral bells blooming because they draw so many bees, or they have in the past. This year I have only seen a few Bumble bees, but they must be doing their job because we have produced several large watermelons. Today as I looked over the flowers that usually attract bees I found a dead bumbler inside an Althea flower.

Is there anything I should do or someone I should contact that might be interested in testing to see what may have caused it to die. He actually died on the job I guess you'd say. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

devastation

Hi,

I have had some of my sunflowers felled and they just produced lateral shoots with flowers, yours may also. Just leave it be and see what happens. In the meantime look at your other flowers and you may find bees, I do.
