When are seeds sent?

We sent out two rounds of seeds in early April. I actually didn't get mine in my mailbox until April 15 so, I expect many of you are getting them right now. There were about 80 addresses that were entered that either didn't have full information or the person had moved. I'll try to post that list somewhere. The next round of seeds will leave here the last week of April and should arrive in mailboxes the first week of May. If you signed up in 2009, you will definitely get sent seeds. If you signed up before then, you need to check back in using the link on the homepage.

Remember to write down the date you plant the seeds. We're hoping to help out the National Phenology Network this year.

Bee Well,

Gretchen

Mix a quarter of a cup or so

Mix a quarter of a cup or so of plain salt to a quart of water, and soak the seeds in this overnight. Spread them on cookie sheets and roast in a very slow oven (150 to 200 degrees) until completely dry. Stir them once or twice during the drying time; this will take three or four hours. If you intend to store them for any length of time, put them in jars while still warm and close tightly. They keep very well in a cool dark place.

Seeds

I'm still waiting for my seeds, are they still being sent out or have I been left out?

Sunflower seeds

I am SO excited about these sunflower seeds! What a wonderful project. I would love to help out the honey bees and this is such a great opportunity. I was wondering if you will still continue to ship the seeds even though it's late in spring? I know I can still plant them! Thanks. :)

sunflower seeds did not germinate

Last year my sunflower seeds did not germinate. I have no idea what went wrong.

There are various methods of

There are various methods of grinding or crushing the seeds, but the easiest is to put them in a food processor and let it do the work. Alternatively, you can use a blender. More labor intensive, but perhaps more appealing, is to use a clean glass jar or bottle and crush the seeds against the bottom of a bowl. It takes more time, but connoisseurs claim that the butter tastes better when it's hand made.

Crushed Seeds

Mine were crushed too. I planted the one good one and it did indeed germinate. I guess I'm surrounding it with slug bait!

Crushed Seeds!

Well I dont have much hope for sunflowers with these seeds. I received them this past week and went to plant today only to find them pulverized! :( The envelope (both mailing and seed) appear pristine, but it must have been a mailing mishap? I found one tiny, uncrushed seed and have planted it just on the offchance it will grow, but I'm not holding my breath on this one.

Seeds

jhfremontca: Received seeds but most of the seeds were crushed, presumably by post office machinery, in the envelope. I planted the 3 or 4 seeds that appear to be intact in a starter pots on 04/20. So far none have geminated but will keep up hope.

Crushed seeds

Hi ...Got my seeds today April 29th, Thanks. Just wanted to let you know that my seeds were also crushed but there may be 3 or 4 seeds that are ok. These seeds need some protection from the post office machinery. I trade seeds all over the world and use only a bubble wrap envelopes and never had a problem with anything getting crushed. But then again they are free for however many seeds get crushed!!:) . I hope the seeds grow and produce more seeds so i can save some seeds for next year and share some as well.. It`s too early to put them in the ground right now. It`ll be another month for sure. We are still getting some snow from time to time..like today then rain tomorrow. I have the perfect spot picked out for them but right now it`s barren until I get some of my bee attracting plants in the ground and my new greenhouse put up near the area. I think I`ll have a look downtown to see if I can buy Lemon Queen seeds. I`d really like to have more than 3 or 4 plants especially if something happens to the seedlings . Oh well, lol. I will BEE back later. Thanks for the seeds Gretchen.

seeds

I received my packet this past week, and they are now happily (I hope) in the ground! My fingers are crossed for some more sunny days in San Francisco.

seeds/account info

I just noticed today that my account indicated "seeds no requested" even though I already confirmed my addy, etc when I received that email last month or so. I reset it and now it says "seeds requested." Are you still able to send out seeds if none have already been sent to me?

I just got mine today

I just received the seeds today (04/17) :-).
