Maybe the Sunflower Project maybe able to work out a deal with a seed company like Burpees. Burpees isn't the only company the Project could approach, I'm sure other members can think of seed companies to ask. Doesn't hurt to ask, whats the worst their going to say?
Seeds
I just talked with a group affiliated with the Lady Bird Johnson Center for Wildflowers. They said they get about an 80% germination rate but, only 30% come up the first year. The rest have a year of dormancy! Yikes, watch all these seeds come up for next summer!

returning seeds from participants
I planted 300 of my own seeds from sunflowers I planted 3 years ago, they have been in a ziploc bag for 2 yrs in my garage, and were left in the heads for a yr before that, in the garage, even during winter in ohio. The seeds still germinated! Every one of them germinated!
purhaps if people sent in their seeds, a certificate of thanks in return my encourage them to do so.
Annie's Annuals in Richmond CA - seed source?
We were able to purchase the correct type of sunflower from Annie's Annuals in Richmond CA. They have a thriving business and offer many organic, native, and heirloom plants. They are at http://www.anniesannuals.com/
I am wondering if they could supply the seeds next year as they are local...not too far from SF State.

Seed source
Why not ask those people who had seeds germinate to donate seeds from their plants back to the great sunflower project?
Great idea!
In a perfect world, we'd find a source for organic seeds so that certified organic farmers can participate. I'd love any leads that anyone has!
