Arghh!! My seeds sprouted and were on their way and one morning they were all gone..nothing but little stumps...the rabbits had a party with my sunflower seedlings and many of my other vegetables. I don't know if there's time to replant and have the sunflower develop flowers before September frosts. Any opinions...I guess it doesn't hurt to try again...I had saved a few seeds just in case of weather...I never thought of critters. On the good side...I have tons of bumble bees in my other flower gardens but I'm afraid I'm not seeing any honey bees and that has surprized me and saddened me and quite frankly worries me.
I received my seeds at the end of May and planted them in containers. Ten germinated and several had started their second set of leaves when they disappeared overnight. Something ate the leaves and left the bare stems.
1. Is it too late to receive and plant new seeds?
2. What can I do to prevent this crop invasion the next time?
In the meantime, I'll try to find mature nursery plants to put in yard this year to avoid the seedling issue. Thanks.
Some gardens are for ornamental purposes only, while some gardens also produce food crops, sometimes in separate areas, or sometimes intermixed with the ornamental plants. Food-producing gardens are distinguished from farms by their smaller scale, more labor-intensive methods, and their purpose (enjoyment of a hobby rather than produce for sale).
This post is a little bit late, but I can report that I received seeds from this project around June 3. I signed up late so no surprise. I planted the seeds before this past weekend. Not a whole lot of workable seeds, maybe 8 or 9 but they'll extend the sunflower season as they catch up to my store-bought seeds that now are almost 3 feet high.
I thought I signed up too late to get seeds from the project this year, so I bought my own @ Walmart. They are Burpee annual Lemon Queen, no scientific name on the pkg. though. They were about $1.79. I planted them on May 20th. I planted several in a pot because I thought they all wouldn't germinate but it looks looks like they did, in only a week! So now I have to transplant or thin, they are growing well, they have two sets of leaves now, I think. I can't wait til they bloom.
I did get the seeds from the project about a week ago. Is there a cutoff date for data submission for this season? I haven't planted all the seeds I have. I have a long growing season here in Southern California.
This is such a great idea. I would love to trade seeds with someone or multiple people. We are starting a new garden this year and would love to try a variety of items. inchirieri auto
just received our seeds. it will be hard to wait a few weeks for optimal planting time though! i may start half inside now just to give them a head start and sow the rest directly the beginning of may. we've had bumblebees in our garden already!
I signed up in 2008 and didn't get my seeds. It's now been over 6 weeks since I signed up again for 2009...still no seeds. Should I give up on this project?
I am located in NC and I received my seeds today. My first graders are SO EXCITED to be participating. We plan on getting the seeds in the ground this afternoon. :)
Hi,
I joined last year and I never received any seeds. Please can you confirm that I will receive them this year as I really would like to get the most out of this project with my year 4 class.
Many thanks,
Melanie
I signed up last year and did not receive seeds, I have tons of bees that come into our yard,
we have some fruit trees and tomatoes but they seem to also be attracted to a low to the ground
bird bath that has a rock in the middle. Can I still get seeds for 2009 sent?
I got your seeds this year and sent you back a bud. Sure am glad I put that one in an envelope. I read here where some people sent them to you in plastic and they got molded. You said they would still be good when they dried out. I wish I had of known that. I went for a ride in the country and collected sun flower seeds, took them home and dried them out for next year. Apparently I didn't dry them enough, and put them in a plastic bag. I opened my seed box to add more types of seeds and saw that all my sun flower seeds were molded. I trashed all of them. I didn't know that plastic would do that, and I didn't know they would still be good after drying. From now on I'm staying away from plastic.
I would really like to participate next year - I never received the seeds this year so we couldn't do it. I am excited about next year's crop already!
Thanks!
In Western Washington, the crops and plants are at least 2 weeks behind because of the cool/cold spells. My sunflower seeds just germinated and they are in the 2 leave stage. Our cherry trees have very few cherries (still small and greenish) probably because it was so cold when they were flowering. We use no chemicals and I have noticed several dead bumblebees over the last 2 weeks. The rosemaries are at the end of their bloom and they did not have as many bees as in past years. Our garden is in a north-facing spot on the Olympic Peninsula. CathyB
Early in the year, we'll send everyone an email and probably ask you to check that your address is correct and to confirm you want to try again. We had over 1000 envelopes come back to us with either wrong addresses or, in some cases, no comprehensible issue - some USPS gremlin, I guess. We're planning to send out seeds early (probably late March/early April) to everyone who has signed up by that point. We're still working out the details so, look for more information soon.
I signed up June 1, but never did get any seeds. I have sunflowers blooming from birdseed, but there aren't any bees on them. I have tons of flowers from early spring till frost and rarely see bees. I also have a lot of clover in the lawn blooming and a few years ago I couldn't walk barefoot without being stung, but the last 3-4 years, there's not a bee to be seen anywhere. Last year there were a LOT of bumblebees...this year I've seen maybe 2 or 3 all summer, and as a gardener, I'm outside virtually all day, every day, weather permitting. I don't use any pesticides or herbicides. The only insects I've seen on my veggie plants are flies, gnats and that type of thing.
Hello - they really, really take two weeks! And - they are very tiny - at first - just two of the tiniest little round leaves....The ones I planted on 5/11 - only now have 4 sets of leaves - they grow slowly. Be patient!

Seed Packets can be found in stores
You can spend under $2 for a packet of Lemon Queen Sunflower seeds at K-Mart, Target, Lowes, Home Depot and still be in the project.
That is what I did and have plants that are between 6" - 36" tall now.
I bought my own seeds

We'll send you seeds
If you signed up already, we'll send you an email this winter to confirm your mailing address and then send seeds in the spring.
