Where would I find out if Sunflowers are native to the state of Md. There has been a big push for native plantings.

One of the best places to look for information about what's native is the USDA Plants database (http://plants.usda.gov/). Sunflowers are native to Maryland (and the rest of the lower 48 states) though not in all habitats.
