planting seeds in Sept 09

I have decided to try an experiment with some of the seeds. I froze them for 2 weeks and have planted them 9/04/09. I also planted some that had not been frozen. It has been so hot in So. Calif. that I think they have a chance for another go round at blooming.

Planting seeds late/UC Davis Bee Garden

I bought seeds this past summer and thought I'd rather plant them in August, than wait until next spring. They sprouted quickly as it was still hot here in Sacramento, in August. I wasn't expecting them to actually get flowers, however, they have! I was a little shocked and very happily surprised I have sunflowers in November. The flowers are a beautiful lemon color, hence the name Lemon Queen? I've never planted sunflowers before in my garden, and I quite honestly couldn't say why. I've not seen any bees buzzing around yet, but have high hopes when I plant my next batch for Spring and Summer blooming. I plan to do a spring and summer batch, so I have flowers over a longer period next year. I'm also very happy to share that UC Davis has recently opened a 1/2 acre garden that's dedicated to show gardeners what plants to plant, to attract bees. I've not visisted it yet, but have suggested this as a field trip to the Sacramento Perennial Plant Club (of which I'm a new member).
