I managed to get 8 sunflowers to sprout, and they now range from 1.5' (I call him "stumpy") to almost 7'. They haven't flowered yet, but are on the verge. I love how most of them will have numerous blooms, rather than just one!
So, no bees yet, but I did let my radishes flower (and go to seed) and the bees seem to love them. I'll try to get some shots of that later on. We've had a heck of a problem with Japanese beetles this year (I've declared war on them), and they've been occasionally munching on the leaves. I've been hand-picking them off.
Same here. Next year organizers should maybe arrange to have seeds hand stamped or try to secure coupons from their supplier?? ie:"good for one package of sunflower seed"
I love the concept of a group science project about something as important as honeybees, and I really LOVE watching bees!
Our seeds arrived a few weeks back. When we planted our garden and opened the package, we found pretty much nothing but dust :( So we went out and bought a Lemon variety that looked (from the picture) like it was really Lemon Queen. They are supposed to grow to about 5-6 feet tall. I'll take pictures and send them along with our reports, so that you can compare apples, er, flower varieties properly. We were in a bit of a hurry to get the garden in as we were going on vacation, or I would have ordered the "official seeds" from somewhere. The seedlings are about 3 inches tall now, and if it will warm up a bit up here in Michigan, we might get flowers before the snow flies :)
I had 3 sunflowers that were about 4 feet tall. On Friday (6.12.09), I noticed that something ate the bud off one of them. Determined to save the others, I sprayed water on all the leaves and then sprinkled cayanne pepper on them. When leaving for work this morning, I noticed that a second one has been bitten off. All of them are growing along the fence, so it could be squirrels who are perching on the fence while they chew. It could also be deer, but it would have been harder for one to have taken the first one and I think I would have seen "evidence" that it had been there. I've only seen 1 deer in the neighborhood since I've lived there. As of this morning, I had 1 remaining that was fence-high. I have several more that are just seedlings. How can I save the ones that are left? The cayanne pepper obvioulsy didn't work. =( (I did see honey bees on my swamp milkweed on Saturday, tho')
I took a strip of old bed sheet (the same thing I use to stake my tomatoes) and wrapped a small section of the sunflower stem where I see the squirrels tried to chew. They didn't get very far into the stem, so I think it will be okay. I tied 2 strips and so far so good. The sunflower is now over 5 feet tall. I may have to move the strips as the sunflower grows - or perhaps it has reached it maximum height and will now concentrate on blooming? I also see new growth between each leaf section. Does Lemon Queen grow more than 1 bud? This is so fun!
hello!
My seeds arrived, mostly crushed about 7 weeks ago. I planted them and have gotten two good plants. I also planted other varieties of sunflower (Rostov, Mammoth, Prado Red) and they are up as well. The plants are about 3 feet tall and I can see the beginnings of the flower bud at the end of the stem. Snails are a problem here in Nor Cal, but I put out some sluggo and kept the sunflowers from being chewed alive.
Looking forward to the developing blossom! I have noticed a lot of bees around here, but not that many honeybees. My salvia leucantha really attracts all kinds of nectar-seekers.
My seeds arrived today. All appear smashed, however I am going to plant them all in a pot.
If they emerge, I will replant them in my garden where they'll receive sun for 2/3 of the day.
I grew some unknown type in this spot 2 years ago and they seemed to thrive there. I was
delighted to get these seeds as I thought I'd been forgotten.
The first batch had only 10 seeds. I ended up with 2 two foot tall plants, no blooms yet. I could not find more seeds in Augusta, but got a pack at Walmart in Myrtle Beach. I'll plant them this week. I have a mixed patch of red bee balm and purple coneflowers that are in full bloom. The bumblebees and butterflies love them.
We planted the 11 Lemon Queen seeds from Renee's Garden 5 JUNE 2009. Mammoth striped sunflower seeds were planted the same day in another small garden. Our gardens received only light rain since, so the soil remains barely moist. Germination will be slow with cool nighttime temperatures only 27 - 44 F every night since 1 MAY. Although the intentional plantings are not sprouted yet, numerous commercial black oil sunflower volunteers are emerging and growing under the bird feeders and randomly in the vegetable and perennial gardens.
This seems to be a good spring for at least 3 species of bumblebees. Queens have been flying since early April despite a cool spring. Several small species of solitary bees also were noted pollinating apples, dandelions, bluets, and now bunchberry and pink ladyslipper.
...slowly, because nothing good ever happens too quickly.
I'm in Southeast PA, so I planted my seeds directly in the ground the week of May 12th. I used the seeds received through this project, as well as 2 packets I purchased from Burpee.
Between my vegetable garden, my back flower bed and my side bed, I've probably got about 100 plants coming up. They're only about an inch or so high at this point...but I cannot wait! My plantings include tomatoes, peppers, squash, pumpkin, pea pods, lettuce, onions, garlic, potatoes, asparagus, beans and many many herbs. I also have bee balm, zinnias, marigolds, geraniums, vincas, dianthus, black eyed susans, lilies, and I forget what else. Now, what I'm hoping for is to see enough bees this year.
I have 3 containers, pots of plants; 2 tomatoes and one for the sunflowers. I waited until May 1st to plant the seeds as tghe weather in Wisconsin is unpredictable. Anyway, approx tree weeks passed and I was just getting ready to start again because I had seen nothing happenin, Surprise! I now have 3 out of 5 plants growing like weeds. The other 2 plants didn't make it :(
I forgot about keeping up with posting, so, sorry this is late. I too signed up for the project late, but
was able to find Lemon Queen sunflower at Walmart and planted them maybe 4 weeks ago.
About half did well, some baby plants "got eaten"(?) so replanted more. Now I have
about 4 plants about 1 foot tall, and 6 plants about 6 inches tall.
Before I received my package of seeds in the mail I had found our local Lowes sold the Lemon Queen Sunflower seeds so I bought 3 packets. I planted my packet, gave one to my sister and one to my inlaws. All of our seeds are growing. I have 3 really strong ones that are about 36" tall now (pretty good for Northern Nevada).
I finally received the packet from the project that has Renee's Garden on them. I'd say half of them survived...I'm going to scatter them here at work to see if they'll grow.
I opened my package and found most of the seeds crushed. I planted two but have nothing growing yet. And this was 3 weeks ago. Please include me in next year's attempt.
My seeds were broken and smashed too. I thought they were goners for sure! I planted them in the corner of the garden anyway and they are about two inches tall now. I have four nice looking plants and one that is struggling. I bought Lemon Queen seeds from the internet and not a one of them has sprouted.
Most of my seeds were broken also. There were 7 whole seeds to plant in the packet.I odered a new seed packet from circaplants.com. They only charge 1 dollar for shipping so my whole order was $3.25.
My envelope was all greasy-looking, and when I opened it up, the seeds were all smashed. I found several that seemed to be intact, and planted them, but I haven't had any luck.
Would it be possible to get any more seeds? If not, then keep me on the list for next year, as I am VERY concerned about the plight of the bees, and would like to do anything I can to add to your body of information.
Many of the seeds in my packet were smashed as well though I did plant the good ones but none have sprouted! It is too late for me to plant more so I am hoping to be included next year in this project.
About 2/3 of my seeds were fine, others were crushed..

Well I planted my seeds yesterday. I was sad to find most of them crushed up upon opening the seed packet. I planted the 5 whole seeds I found.
I have some volunteer sunflowers that sprouted from last year. I hope they are valid for observation.
