bees on other flowers

While my other sunflowers spieces have not blossomed, bees are attracted to my Black-eyed Susan.
Yesterday evening, I saw three Honey bees stayed on two black-eyed susan for several minutes. They appeared enjoyed their flowers.

Leaf Blowers

newbie help

Okay, my neighbor told me about this site and just brought over the web address today. So, I have signed up. Obvously it is too late this year. But I read that they will take counts from other flowers. I saw that one listed was tickweed. I have 3 of those plants that I planted last year, that are doing great this year. I also planted evening shade sunflowers about 7 yrs ago and they birds faithfullly leave behind enough seeds to flood my yard for the next year. I also have some giant california and mixed colored zinnas that are doing awesome this year and some dahlias, and I have bees everywhere. I dont hang out around the sunflowers after about 9-10 am because the bees are massive everywhere. So, would counting any of these help, I guess if anything I guess I could do it for myself for practice for next year. Oh and I forgot I do have a few lemon sunflowers but I think they are like lemon peel or something been a couple of years since I sowed them too.
So, what do I do for now, just spread the word and get to know people here?

Count from other flowers?

My seeds didn't germinate here in Western Washington so I'm waiting for some sunflowers to bloom from bird sunflower seeds, probably in 2 weeks. I have a LOT of bumble bees on a big coneflower - can I count those? Tonight I see several of them sleeping on the coneflower - sometimes more than one on each flower - so cute - like they're saving their place for the morning, or maybe they're drunk with pollen?! I also have a wildflower garden that attracts the bees. I can count from the coneflower if that would be okay. There were a TON of bumble bees on the big rhodies in my yards earlier in the season, but the blooms are done on those now, so there are just the few on the coneflower.

i only have 1 sunflower and

i only have 1 sunflower and it hasn't even bloomed yet, but i have tons of honey bees and bumbble bees oh and wasps too lol, but we have flowers like groundcovers, i'm not a flower expert and i don't really remember the name of them since we bought them about 3 years ago, but we have a few different ground covers and some little flowers that have been growing from the weeds, and they love them, so much that i haven't even work on my yard so they keep coming!!! do you know if at some point it gets dangerous to have so many bees at your house???

waiting for flowers in pa

hiyas
i have 3 sunflower plants in a pot on the deck and 2 in the garden plot. they are currently between 2' and 4' tall and i am still waiting for flower buds to form. there have been tons of different kinds of bees on other plants so i expect good results when i get flowers. here in northeast pa is has been an unusually rainy season!

Bees on other flowers

My sunflowers are growing well here in eastern Washington, but not blooming yet. I have five healthy plants from the seed packet sent, and they look like they are beginning to form the flower. We have lots of honey bees and bumble bees on other flowers in our garden, vegetable and flower gardens. We've had a very hot, dry summer so far. The veggies are getting pollinated very well and growing like crazy. Looks like I'll be doing my counts in August, once they start blooming.

Nature has given us such

Nature has given us such immense beauty yet we care little for it. I live in Toronto and my nearest Toronto florist has some amazing varieties of flowers. I cannot buy each of them but I do admire some really nice flowers with the most wonderful colors you'll find on the flower petals.

Do take good care of your sunflower, they are all precious.

citrus bee heaven

right now here in phoenix area my citrus is blooming and i have so many bees enjoying the blossums i couldn't even begin to count them. some of my wild sown sunflowers are coming up but none have bloomed yet.

bees

I agree with the others in this post, about the seeds not growing. But there were bees on the tomatoes eggplant and peppers,as well as the flowers in the garden, maybe we should use other flowers.

Why not use the Lavendar as the plant to count off of??

I have numerous bee & Bumble & native sightings but not on the sunflower, of the 5 remaining plants one has no bud at all, 2 are very sturdy and have lots of buds but no bloom, 1 has a lanky stock and 1 flower.

The bees & Co. have done a nice job on the veggie garden of zuchinni, cucumbers and the tomato plants have gone wild!

There are 5 sage species, comfrey, coyote mint, 3 different lavendars, Cali Poppies, carpeteria, butterfly bush and a few more different varieties of plants and shrubs.

Number one on the bee, butterfly & hummingbird list is the Lavendar!!!! Lots of people in the group seem to have Lavendar in their yards. Maybe next year we can switch over to the Lavendar because as soon as it kicks in & blooms - theres bees. Its easier to grow and maintain.

What is everyone's thoughts on this?

Bees on other flowers

I have one sunflower plant from the packet sent -- I'm thankful for the one! I'm still waiting for it to bloom. Here in Salem, Oregon, we have lots of honeybees rilght now, especially on the borage flowers. Bumblebees prefer the lavender and hibiscus. These are black fuzzy bumblebees with light colored thoraxes (and head? I don't see close-up that clearly!), and a light band near the tail. I'll take a magnifying glass out and try to get a better view.
There are a few honeybees (?) on the lavender that look a little different from the fuzzy golden brown borage bees. They seem less fuzzy, a little darker in color, their stripes show up more. Yellowjackets and paper wasps (probably -- recent interlopers here) visit the lavender sometimes.
Also a tiny orange-brown butterfly is here now that doesn't look like I think skippers look -- wings folded upright, more delicate than skipper butterflies.
And tiny flies or bees or wasps on the tiniest flowers, like the yarrow and garlic chives.

First sample submission: at last!

While the weather up here in Brantford, Ontario, Canada had been outstanding for growth, only 2 seeds from the packet provided, germinated. The first bloom actually appeared the first weekend of August but between family events, rain and more rain, it wasn't until today did I find the time to sit down to observe. My apologies.

bees on flowers

My butterfly garden has lot's of bee's. I have 3 sunflowers that germinated from the project but have yet to flower. But in my garden the bumble bee's love the penstemon, they have been hanging around all summer. The honey bee's like my lavender, scabiosa, cone flowers, zinnia, and catmint.
A few years ago I thought I had discovered a new type of bee. It was almost all yellow. He was on a sunflower and when he started walking on the leaves he left powdery footprints all over. I realized that he was covered with pollen, and just a honeybee, lol.

Bees on Moon flowers

Only one of the sunflower germinated and has only one sunflower bud which is small but visible and not bloom yet.
I have about 20 Moon Flower plants, big white flower smells good and bloom for a little more than one day.
For the past few days in the morning, there is about 10-16 blooming at the same time and the count of the bees is about 10-20 and some of the Moon Flowers have about 4 bees visit at the same time. And I usually can see 1-2 different kind of bees. I have a lot of bees where I live, Roseland, NJ. I believed there is a beehive at my backyard. I just don't know where. But it is very rare to see butterfly. Once in a while see a white small one.

I've had bees attracted to

I've had bees attracted to my:
-Cosmos (White, Purple and Pink)
-Nasturtium (Orange)
-Portulaca (Pink, Orange, Whit, Yellow and Red)
-Asters (Purple and Fushia)
-Dhalias (Pink and White)
-Osteospernum (Purple and Orange)
-Honeysuckle
-Patunias
-Begonias
-Marigolds
-Wildflowers and Clover
My vegetable garden was successful this year as well and I spotted bees on my pepper flowers and tomato flowers.
Unfortunately none of my sunflowers grew.

Butterfly Bush & Lavender

My Butterfly Bush has had up to 8 honey bees, couple of Bumble Bees and as yet unidentified native bees and hummingbirds at a time as they love both plants. My sunflowers are growing but no blooms yet.

Bumble Bees

My sunflowers haven't bloomed either. We had a particularly wet spring/summer so I'm sure I lost some if not all of my seeds. I did plant other sunflower varieties and I think that is what is sprouting now. They have buds on them so they will bloom soon. However, I do have LOTS of Bumble Bees on my Coneflowers and Liatris. They are also attracted to my hostas that are blooming. I continue to look for Honey Bees but haven't seen any on these flowers. : (

Bumble Bees and certain flower shapes

I've been looking closely at bumble bees in my garden here in Michigan. They have a long tongue like a drinking straw they use to eat nectar. On bee balm there are dozens of tiny tubes that comprise the flower head. The bee will stick her straw down one, then another, then another. A different bee species with a shorter "straw" could not drink nectar from this plant.

Most bee species are generalists, feeding on a range of plants through their life cycle. By having several plant species flowering at once, and a sequence of plants flowering through spring, summer, and fall, you can support a range of bee species that fly at different times of the season.
