Bee Guides

For this project, we are only interested in identifying certain groups of bees: honeybees, bumble bees, carpenter bees, metallic green bees and then we lump the rest of the solitary bees together. To see these bees and get some tips about telling them apart, click here.

We've described a lot of types of bees. You can click on the names on the left of the screen to see descriptions and photos.

There is a formal academic study about sunflower bees in the southwest. You can find it here

However, there are over 35,000 species of bees in the world and we think there are around 4,500 species of bees in the United States. It is incredibly difficult to identify bees to species without a microscope and even with a microscope, it can be hard. There are some common bees or groups of bees that you can learn. Mace Vaughan and Lisa Schonberg of the Xerces Society are collaborating with Gretchen LeBuhn of San Francisco State and the leader of the Great Sunflower Project on a Guide to Bees that will be out soon. We've given you a preview of the descriptions from the Guide on the left. We'll be updating these descriptions and adding pictures over the season. The best way to learn your bees is to take the Bee Course.

The bible of bee literature is Charles Michener's Bees of the World. The second edition was just published in 2007. Mich should be an inspiration to all of us. This is a great year to celebrate Mich as he will be 90 on September 22.

I planted my seeds ~9(?) and I have 6 that have sprouted. I planted this year's in a different area. I am on the lookout for seedlings from last year's seeds where none germinated, hoping dormant seeds got a real treatment of Ohio winter and decide to get to work. I have a ton of carpenter bees that are more interested in the red cedar fence than any of the perennials currently blooming. I'm not counting because none of the flowers blooming now are on your list. I'm keeping my phenology data for when that page is up and running. Great start to the year and we are psyched for bee action!

Bee colonies are maintained all over the world to pollinate agricultural crops. In the winter of 2006-2007, beekeepers in the United States and other parts of the world began to report the catastrophic loss of colonies, a phenomenon dubbed Colony Collapse Disorder. While the death of some bees in a colony is normal during winter months, the recent number of deaths has been unusually high, with some colonies losing more than 75 percent of their bees. After such devastating die-offs, the colony can no longer sustain itself. Scientists are still trying to explain the phenomenon, which threatens the economic future of the 130 fruit, vegetable, nut, ornamental, and fiber crops in the U.S. pollinated by honeybees.
