2009

If you'd like to start seeds on your own, you can use annual Lemon Queen Sunflower seeds. They are pretty easy to track down at garden stores and on the internet.

If you signed up in 2008,, request seeds here.

If you are new to the sunflower project, click here and we will add you to our list for spring.

If you are from outside the United States or Canada, we can't mail you seeds, but we are putting together a list of places you can purchase them online and still participate. Lemon Queen sunflower seed is widely available in Europe. Please do join us.

Thanks for joining. Please, spread the word, we'd love to get as many people as possible planting sunflowers!

yes we want seeds this year

seeds

I do hope this years seeds are better than last years. I will look for the variety to which you refer. We are still in drought so I hope I can indeed grow them.

Seeds

We tend to get large bumble bees since i don 't mow often and our clover grows fast. But would love to hav e sunflowers and get more of these sweet bees. My children and i enjoy watchin g them.

seeds and location

Please ensure I am signed up for next year. I will have more time on my hands since my relocation to NM and the employment position is bad.

We'll send you seeds

Well, I hope your job situation improves. We look forward to seeing lots of sunflowers in your garden this year.
Best wishes

Sunflower Seeds 2009

Please sign me up for next year. I think getting the seeds a little earlier this year will help. Thank you :)

I agree

I'm pretty sure I got dud seeds last year and then planted my own a little late as a result. :( I'm really hoping to be able to participate with the control seeds this year. I got quite a few bees on other species of flowers despite it being a potted/boxed garden.

See you in March!

We look forward to having you continue!

include me

Sir kindly inclyde me in the new batch for spring 2009

Happy to help

We know how important our food supply is now more than ever. With our corn being burned for fuel and bee populations being down, we have to do all we can to preserve our lives. Thank you for your contribution to our existence. Kim

2009

Hello!! Count me in, too!!

2009

Please count me in for 2009.
Blessings on your work, Merry

Count me in for 2009

I also would like to have my seeds earlier this next year. The bees that I did have on the property were particularly fond of the thistles.
I learned more about bees due to the fact I had to call someone to relocate a hive before winter set in and in the spring we will try to get the other hive out of a tree.

would like to try again next year

I got my seeds late, but my 9 year old son and I planted them anyway. They finally bloomed a couple of weeks ago, and we will do a data collection this coming Saturday 10/25. I don't know how much longer the flowers will last, but we'll see if we can squeeze in another data collection. We did notice lots of bees on other plants and trees in our garden, so that was a good sign.

More data would be GREAT!

We'd love to get some data on bees from this late! I think the fall bees are really important for a lot of our wildflowers, particularly members of the daisy family. Thanks.

Want to try again next year

As many others have stated here--our sunflowers were a bust this year, but we'd love to try again next year! We planted seeds early that we had bought at Walmart, and they started out well. The seeds we got through the project came too late to really get started and our others seemed to be doing well, so we didn't plant the project seeds. However, the sunflowers never got much further than an 8"-10" sprout--then it was too late to do much else. Maybe next year we will have a better location and better luck!

mee, too

Planted a garden, even had sunflowers. Finally read back issue of Organic Gardening and saw this project. I sooo want to play. Actually, I have a small plot at my condo, a large garden in the next county, my friend's yard which i will be terra-forming next season, and a large open plot of land about 20 paces from my condo. I could go overboard here.

would like to try again next year

due to getting seeds too late to get a good start and then my own health issues, my garden was a bust this year. I plan on getting a better start next year and would love to try again! I had a huge "crop" of jewel weed that attracted a huge number of bees just off my deck where I could watch them as I recovered.

Looking forward to 2009

We are looking to forward to participating in 2009. Where we live though the bees like the pumpkin flowers better, they did not pollinate the sunflowers as much as they did the pumpkins. Is that normal?

Squash bees

Interestingly, there are a whole set of bees that only visit the squashes. Check out the descriptions of the genus Peponapis. They are fascinating!

Next Year

We would love to try again next year. Getting seeds earlier would definitely help.

Sign me up for next year too!

I really enjoyed growing the sunflowers, depite having to wrestle with lace bugs and grasshoppers chewing on them, and squirrels and birds. They did quite well. I tended 17 Mammoth Sunflowers as they grew to full bloom.

Happy Gardening!

Please sign me up for next year

Cold, rainy weather in our area ruined my flowers this year. I'd love to try again next year. Thanks.

No Sunflowers this year...looking forward to next year!

I am sorry that my seeds never grew. I have enjoyed my garden even without the Sunflowers and watching the Bees that come to it all the same. I will be signing up for next year and really hope to be able to participate.
Thank you!

Plot problems for sunflowers - lessons learned..lol

Central New York Plantcycle http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cnyplantcycle

My sunflower patch was having a tough time growing. I had to keep replacing plants that died from too dry soil and carry water over in three lieter bottles and fertilizer every time we had a downpour as the soil was very sandy and the area had landfill. I put purchased topsoil on top of the seeds but as soon as it washed away the plants were sitting in almost pure hot sand in 90 degree weather.
I will pick a better location. Thought there were many bees coming to the clover and rose of sharon and flowering crabapple blossoms, we had alot of cloudy days the past few weeks or rain after they finally opened! I usually have the best luck with sunflowers and that patch of ground was quite difficlt to grow anything. Last time there I was chasing geese with my scooter away from the flowers! Im sure once they set seed, they will be goners from the geese or the wood chucks.. live and learn! Cher

You can put me on your list for mailing, but I will use the seeds that I just obtained for next seasons garden. I will offer to make one at the public library and one at our green project space and see what happens instead of handing out seeds individually. I think it will get more attention that way.

mailing list

I would like to be put on the mailing list for 2009 for sunflower seeds.

None of our seeds came up...even though we tried with a second batch. Sorry!
